Summertime is here and the mercury is rising. Sweltering temperatures can be uncomfortable, but they also put tremendous demand on the electric grid.
During heatwaves when electricity demand peaks, state officials may call for voluntary reductions in electricity use. Energy conservation is key to minimizing power outages. Interruptions of electric service are possible during the day and evening hours due to extreme heatwave conditions. Be prepared for Flex Alerts which are urgent calls to immediately conserve electricity and shift usage to off-peak hours, typically after 6 pm.
You can help your community and save yourself a little money by conserving electricity on the hot summer days. Follow these ten steps to quickly reduce your electricity usage:
- Set your home thermostat to 78 degrees or higher.
- Keep windows and doors closed during the heat of the day to prevent the loss of cooled air.
- Operate high-energy appliances like dishwashers and washer/dryers during early morning and late evening hours when the electricity demands decreases. Wash only full loads of dishes and clothes.
- Minimize how often you open your refrigerator or freezer.
- Avoid using your stove to keep your home cooler and cook outside at one of the BBQ grilling stations.
- Prevent heat gain through your windows by closing the blinds.
- Run a ceiling fan while your air conditioner is on. This circulates the cool air and will allow you to raise your thermostat about 4 degrees while experiencing the same level of comfort.
- Turn off unnecessary lights and unplug unused appliances.
- On hot afternoons, head to the pool and cool off, adjusting your thermostat to 85 degrees or higher when you’re away from home.
- Avoid using evaporative coolers or humidifiers at the same time an air conditioner is running.
